DTF Transfers - FAQs

What are direct to film (DTF) Heat Transfers?

Direct to Film (DTF) transfers are a method of printing designs onto garments and other textiles, offering an alternative to traditional methods. This process involves using DTF inks to print a design onto a special film, which is then transferred to the fabric using heat.

DTF transfers are popular because they allow for high-quality, durable prints with vibrant colours and fine details. They can be used on a wide variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and blends, and are ideal for custom apparel, promotional items, personal projects and more.

Benefits of DTF Transfers

  • Versatility: DTF transfers can be used on almost any type of fabric, making them incredibly versatile for different projects.
  • Durability: The prints are long-lasting and withstand multiple washes without fading or cracking.
  • Quality: Produces high-resolution images with vibrant colours and fine details.

Applications of DTF Transfers

  • Custom Apparel: Ideal for creating custom t-shirts, hoodies, and other apparel.
  • Promotional Items: Perfect for branding promotional merchandise like bags, hats, and more.
  • Personal Projects: Great for personalising items for special events, gifts, or personal use.

Key Steps in the DTF transfer process

  1. Design Creation: A design is created using graphic design software.
  2. Printing: The design is printed onto a special transfer film using a DTF printer. These printers use pigment-based DTF inks to ensure vibrant and durable prints.
  3. Powder Application: A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the printed film. This powder sticks to the wet ink and will serve as the adhesive when transferring the design to the fabric.
  4. Curing: The film with the adhesive powder is cured, usually in an oven or with a heat press, to activate the adhesive properties of the powder.
  5. Transfer: The cured film is placed onto the fabric, and heat is applied using a heat press. The heat and pressure cause the adhesive to bond the design to the fabric.
  6. Peeling: Just a few seconds after application, the film is peeled away, leaving the design on the fabric.

What is a gang sheet?

A gang sheet is a method used in the printing industry, particularly for garment decoration, where multiple designs or graphics are printed on a single large sheet of transfer material.

Some key points about gang sheets:

  • Efficiency: Gang sheets are efficient because they allow multiple designs to be printed at once, saving time and resources. This is particularly useful for small runs or custom DTF transfers, and bulk orders (DTF bulk prints) where different designs are needed on the same or different garments.
  • Cost Effectiveness: By printing multiple designs on one sheet, the cost per design can be reduced. This is because the setup and material costs are spread across multiple prints rather than being applied to each individual design. This makes gang sheets ideal for DTF transfers wholesale, where cost efficiency is crucial.
  • Versatility: Gang sheets can include various sizes and shapes of designs, making them versatile for different types of garments or items. For example, a single gang sheet could include a large design for the front of a t-shirt, a smaller logo for the sleeve, and a different design for the back.
  • Customisation: This method allows for greater customisation in printing, as different designs can be included on the same sheet, providing more options for personalising garments.
  • Waste Reduction: By maximising the use of the transfer material, gang sheets help reduce waste. Unused space on the sheet is minimised, making the process more environmentally friendly.
